Protect your beauty

Over 90% of premature ageing is caused by UV, which is present all year round -  and unlike the sun's light it can't be seen or felt.

Wearing SPF is the most beautiful thing you can do for your skin.

FAQs

Why do I need SPF?

Wearing SPF helps to protect your skin against the damage caused by UV, which is the major cause of premature aging (loss of elasticity, fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin tone) not to mention skin cancer. Sun protection is recommended when the UV index is over 3, which is all year round in some parts of the country. During summer in Australia the UV is routinely over 10 in most capital cities. But UV rays can create skin damage even when you're not getting sunburnt. Whilst UVB rays vary seasonally, UVA the ones responsible for the signs of ageing are constant year round and make up 95% of UV that reaches earth (and our skin). While SPF is our favourite part of sun protection, it is important to remember it’s just one part. Sunglasses, hats, protective clothing and shady spots will also help keep your beautiful skin healthy.

Do I need to wear SPF all year round?

While UV is higher in summer, it is still present every day of the year. And UV is sneaky, temperature doesn’t affect UV levels, and unlike the sun’s rays it can’t be seen or felt. That means UV can be just as high on a cool or even cold day. There are two types of UV to think about. UVB rays that vary seasonally and UVA, the ones responsible for the signs of ageing, these are more constant year round and make up 95% of UV that reaches earth (and our skin). The easy way to minimise the risk of skin damage from UV is to make SPF a non-negotiable in your daily routine. That’s why BEAUTI-FLTR skin finishes are designed to make you fall in love with daily SPF. But remember while SPF is our favourite part of sun protection, it’s just one part. Sunglasses, hats, protective clothing and shady spots will also help keep your beautiful skin healthy.

What about Vitamin D?

It’s true the sun's UV radiation is both the major cause of skin damage and the best source of Vitamin D – wildly unfair! But sensible sun protection won’t create the risk of a Vitamin D deficiency for most people. A few minutes of incidental exposure to the sun on most days is all it takes to maintain adequate Vitamin D.

UVA vs UVB?

Spoiler alert, neither one of them is friendly. UVA creates cellular damage that causes premature ageing and increases the risk of skin cancer. UVA represents 95% of UV that reaches the earth and it remains more constant year-round. UVB causes sunburn and increases the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma.

Where does SPF fit into my routine?

Everyday. SPF is the last (and the most important) step in your morning skincare routine. Our mornings go a like this: Cleanse, Serum/s, Moisturise, SPF.

How much SPF should I wear?

Cancer Council’s recommendation is ¼ teaspoon (1.25ml) for your face and another ¼ teaspoon (1.25 ml) for the neck (don’t forget your neck!). Less sunscreen means less protection.

Physical vs Chemical Sunscreen?

There are a lot of myths about the differences, but in fact, they both work in a very similar way. So the most important question is: Which kind feels best on your skin? Because, let’s face it, that’s the one you’ll choose to wear. SPF is hands down the best and cheapest anti-aging product, but if you don’t love it, it won’t make it onto your face every day. Physical sunscreens (zinc oxide & titanium dioxide) and chemical sunscreens (everything else) both work by absorbing UV and turning it into heat. Physical sunscreens also scatter and reflect about 5-10% of UV.

Does sunscreen expire?

Yes. Always be sure to check the expiry date stamped at the top of your tube. Do not rely on expired sunscreen for protection. If you have any questions about the expiry date of your BEAUTI-FLTR products, please contact us at hello@beautifltr.com.au.
